Guidelines for Paralegal Utilization

Proper utilization of the services of paralegals contributes to the delivery of cost effective, high-quality legal services. Paralegals and the legal profession should be assured that measures exist for identifying paralegals and their role in assisting attorneys in the delivery of legal services. The primary governing rule in utilizing paralegal services is Rule 5.3 of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct: “supervising lawyers should ensure that the conduct of paralegals and legal assistants is compatible with the lawyer’s professional obligations.”
