Janie Ginocchio, MPA, coordinates the Arkansas Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience Workgroup. The workgroup is a cross-sector collaborative working to prevent childhood trauma and heal its effects through raising awareness, creating a trauma-informed workforce, and systems and policy change. She was an award-winning reporter and editor for community newspapers around the state, and was the 2011 recipient of the I.F. Stone Award for Investigative Journalism from the Arkansas Press Association. Description: In Arkansas, 60% of adults and 56% of children have experienced at least one category of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which include abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, and can cause emotional and developmental trauma. The effects of trauma impact the legal system in various ways, through lawyer-client relationships, by reducing access to justice, and creating secondary trauma and compassion fatigue among legal professionals. The impacts of trauma on the legal system go beyond child welfare to adult and juvenile justice, family court, and conflict mediation. This program will give an overview of ACEs, trauma, and toxic stress, and how using ACEs science and trauma-informed legal advocacy can create better outcomes for clients, victims, and lawyers themselves.
