Meet John McGinnes, 3L
UA Little Rock Bowen School of Law

1. Why did you choose to pursue a J.D. and what do you hope to do with your degree after graduation?

Witnessing my parents' struggle to reclaim their hard-earned money through a legal battle over selling their business fueled my passion for justice. After a successful career as an investigative officer in the telecommunications division, where I delved into legal processes and hearings, I knew pursuing a J.D. was my calling. My aim post-graduation is to serve the rural community of NE Arkansas, advocating for those who need a legal voice and contributing to the betterment of our society.

2. What are some opportunities you have engaged in during your time at law school?

I've actively participated in four experiential learning clinics, each offering unique insights. From aiding veterans affected by Agent Orange to providing legal assistance in divorce cases in the Arkansas Delta, my experiences extended to areas such as tenant rights, contracts, scam protection, and land disputes. Currently, as an advanced student and mentor in the Veterans Legal Service Clinic, I am committed to supporting fellow students through their clinic experiences.

3. What has been your favorite part of law school so far?

Engaging in stimulating discussions with peers on legal issues has been a highlight; however, the mock court trials in the lawyering skills class have been particularly exhilarating. The spirited debates in this setting ignite the advocate within me, making them a cherished part of my law school experience.

4. What are your hobbies outside of work and school?

While law school demands the majority of my time, maintaining strong family bonds is paramount. Our longstanding tradition of Friday night gatherings, featuring movies and pizza, has endured for over 20 years. This ritual ensures a balance between academic pursuits and quality time with loved ones.

5. Tell us something interesting about yourself that we couldn’t learn from reading your resume.

Beyond the legal realm, I find enjoyment in playing video games, particularly first-person shooters. From the earlier classics like Quake 1 and Team Fortress to modern titles like Borderlands, Valheim, Ark, and No Man’s Sky, gaming serves as a shared activity with my children, creating lasting memories beyond the courtroom.
