ArkBar Young Lawyers Domestic Violence Handbook: Helping to Protect Survivors and Change Lives

Helping protect survivors of domestic violence changes lives.  We have counties in Arkansas that have no shelters or formal programs for helping domestic violence survivors.  At the Arkansas Bar Association, we are committed to serving the public’s interest and to giving legal help to those in need.  That’s one of the reasons that I am so proud of the Young Lawyers Section of the Arkansas Bar Association.  They produced a companion set of Domestic Violence Handbooks that survivors and advocates for survivors can use to help them through the court system.  It is written in a format which is easy to read and understand, which makes it a great tool to help in seeking an order of protection, dealing with custody and visitation issues, and protecting survivors’ rights as the victim of a crime.  Printed copies of these handbooks have been distributed to all 75 circuit clerks in the state, to all of our circuit court and district court judges, to every domestic violence shelter in Arkansas, and to the Arkansas Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  When I look at how active and giving the Young Lawyers Section of the Arkansas Bar Association is, I know that there is hope for our future through this group of caring and sharing lawyers.
