Pro
Bono Representation of Low-Income Persons
Thousands of Arkansas lawyers volunteer
their time to help the poor in their communities
by working through pro bono programs operated
by civil legal services throughout the state.
The new Arkansas Access to Justice commission
has focused on pro bono as a way of enhancing
equal justice in the state. You too can become
part of that effort and make a difference by
joining the Pro Bono Partnership. If you would
like to volunteer or find out more information
about these programs, visit http://www.arlegalservices.org/Home/PublicWeb/Volunteer.

Disaster
Legal Assistance
Victims of
tornadoes and other disasters in Arkansas
can receive free legal assistance through
the Disaster Legal Assistance Project with
the Arkansas Bar Association. This
project has assisted hundreds and hundreds
of disaster victims, most recently during
the tornadoes in the spring of 1997 and
January 1999. Led by the Association's
Young Lawyer's Section, the Project is done
in conjunction with the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA), local bar
associations, and local legal service
programs.
Among the types of legal services available
through the Project are assistance with
insurance claims, counseling on housing
problems, replacement of Wills and other
legal documents destroyed in this disaster,
drafting of Powers of Attorney, and
referring individuals to local or state
agencies.
Disaster victims needing legal assistance
should call 375-4606 in
Pulaski County. If calling from outside of
Pulaski County, the number is 1-800-650-0856.
It is best to call between 1:00 and 4:00
p.m. during weekdays.
Any attorneys not already involved in the
Disaster Legal Assistance Project are
encouraged to volunteer, especially those
attorneys in the affected counties.
Attorneys wishing to volunteer should call
the Arkansas Bar Association.
