State Mock Trial Competition

What: State High School Mock Trial Competition

When: Saturday, March 9, 2013

Where: Pulaski County Courthouse, 401 W. Markham, Little Rock, AR

Eight high school teams will compete in Little Rock on Saturday, March 9, 2013, in the state finals of the Mock Trial Competition sponsored annually by the Arkansas Bar Association. The competition will be held at the Pulaski County Courthouse at Markham and Broadway. The first match will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the final match will begin around 4:00 p.m.

More than 50 students representing Jonesboro High School, Little Rock Catholic High School, Little Rock Central High School, Mount St. Mary Academy, Parkview High School, Sheridan High School,Springdale High School and Tuckerman High School will meet Saturday in the single-elimination tournament. The students will play the roles of attorneys and witnesses to present a civil case to lawyers and judges. Judges for the final round include the Honorable Kristine G. Baker, the Honorable Mary McGowan and Association President Charles L. Harwell.

Saturday’s winner will compete in the National High School Mock Trial Competition in Indianapolis May 9-11, 2013. Little Rock Central High School represented Arkansas in as the State Champion atthe national tournament last year.

Many lawyers and teachers from across the state meet with the students for several months to prepare them for the competition. The Mock Trial case is released in October each year. Funding for these events is provided by the Arkansas Bar Association, Arkansas Bar Foundation, and Annual Sponsors. Additional resources for teachers were made available this year in part from funding from the Craighead County Community Foundation and the Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation, an affiliate office of the Arkansas Community Foundation, Inc. The Arkansas Bar Association is a voluntary, statewide organization with more than 5,000 members. Among its purposes are the advancement of the administration of justice and the fostering among its members high ideals of integrity, learning andpublic service.
